Pilates involves a series of controlled movements that target specific muscles to address muscle imbalance and realign your body. Gradually you will start to feel lighter and taller, use your muscles more effectively, and improve your range of movement. Invented by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920s, the benefits of Pilates have been widely shared by people of both sexes, and all ages and backgrounds. Many healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists and osteopaths, recommend their patients take up Pilates for rehabilitation after injuries, or to treat chronic pain caused by mechanical dysfunction of muscles. While some people may choose Pilates for remedial exercise, others such as professional dancers, actors and athletes devote their time to Pilates training in order to enhance their physical performance.

 

Today the name ‘Pilates’ seems to have gained public recognition, yet still little is known by the public about how Pilates works, or what defines Pilates as a truly unique exercise amongst a range of holistic exercises available to us.
